As a Master's student at a relatively decent Florida institution, I wake up each morning thanking God for allowing me to see yet another sunrise and blessing me with so many unthinkable oppportunities. Although, there are also mornings that I add to my thank you God prayers, a little "P.S." prayer. I pray that the bill collectors will forget my phone number for just one more day until I can catch up with other more pressing financial burdens.
I have recently been offered a spot in my department's PhD program. For me this isn't just a good opportunity, this is a great opportunity. I have a guaranteed spot, I have a guaranteed salary that consists of 5 digits (trust me, this is a big deal), and I will be able to tailor a program that will take me around the globe in 3 years. So what's the problem?
Hi, my name is Poor, Broke, and Struggling.
Although this is an amazing opportunity I am also 27 years old and in debt. I try to avoid all conversation with my family because when I mention that I am considering a PhD, the conversation quickly shifts to "what about getting a job" and "how are you going to pay your bills".

For every dark cloud there is a silver lining. When I talk to some of my classmates, because of their background and inexperience with being Poor, Broke, and Struggling, they don't know the basics of what i like to call "Creative Financing". For instance, I am broke as all hell, but on a monthly basis I make about $1000. With that $1000 I pay my VERY expensive car note, rent, food, and travel to and from my hometown to help out friends about twice a month. Basically, I stretch the hell out of that thousand dollars. I also have to pay for bills that pop up, prescriptions (did i mention I don't have health insurance, nothing decent anyway) as well as any other incidental expenses that may arise. When I talk to my friends they don't quite understand how to get $100 out of a $10 bill. This topic will be covered in a future blog commentary.
